This is a government initiative that funds up to 30 hours of early education for eligible children from 9 months old who would benefit most from early access to childcare. Children who are eligible to claim funding from 9 months old are able to claim the first term after they turn 9 months old.

Children who are confirmed as eligible will be offered up to 30 free early years education hours per week for 38 weeks (if you choose this funding option this will mean you will be charged full price in all the school holidays), which totals 570 hours for your child’s eligible funding year. As First Steps are open for 51 weeks per year you can also choose a stretched offer which entitles your child to 22 hours per week throughout the year and not pay full price in the school holidays.

First Steps is registered to take children for the 9 months plus funding, parents must apply for the funding directly and be awarded the hours prior to taking up a place.

While the funded hours must be free at the point of delivery, government funding is not designed to cover the cost of meals, consumables, or additional services.

This means that while nurseries can continue to provide these important extras, any charges must be voluntary and clearly communicated. The guidance specifically mentions:

• consumables such as nappies or sun cream
• meals and snacks provided for children

At First Steps Nursery, we have always taken pride in being open and transparent with our families. For example, parents have always provided nappies, wipes, and creams, and we have never charged for everyday consumables such as sun cream, snacks or the light tea that every child receives each day. Our only additional request is for a small contribution towards lunches when a child is funded for more than half a day.

We believe this meal is so much more than just food on a plate – it gives children the chance to enjoy a nutritious, balanced hot meal each day, which helps them:

• build healthy eating habits from an early age
• stay energised and focused for play and learning
• enjoy the social experience of sitting together, sharing food, and building confidence at mealtimes

For many young children, this can be the most substantial and balanced meal of their day, and we see the positive impact it has on their wellbeing, growth, and development.

We do, however, need to be honest about sustainability. Like many other nurseries, we already subsidise fees, and the funding provided per hour is still less than the true cost of delivery. Your contributions towards meals, where possible, genuinely help us to keep providing the warm, nurturing environment and quality experiences that First Steps is known for.

The Nursery is open from 8am until 6pm weekdays, all throughout the year.

We only close on Bank Holidays, and Christmas Day through to New Year’s Day.
